I am writing to tell of my horrific experience, which started initially with a swollen knee whilst on a lovely holiday in Menorca.
The knee then became very swollen and red. As I already suffered from bad arthritis I presumed this was the effects of extreme heat and more than usual exercise. On return flight my knee was so painful that a wheelchair was needed to get home. A doctor was called out to the house, who then took a blood test and came to the house the following day and said I needed to attend A & E urgently. An ambulance was called and I then had to have emergency surgery to remove fluid from my knee and a drip with very strong antibiotics. It was SEPTIC arthritis and the bacteria was in my bloodstream.
Then followed 16 days in hospital plus 4 weeks at home having antibiotics thru a PIC line. I was then readmitted to hospital after my legs refused to work one morning, only to discover I had a septic access on my back and my back was literally collapsing. Several operations latee and suffering much pain I am now at home. My mobility has been severely affected and I require a wheelchair and mobility scooter to get about.
So basically I would like to warn anyone with arthritis anywhere in the body….if the joint becomes hot and swollen with intense pain and the area in proximity swells…please see a doctor immediately.
This condition can be fatal if not treated promptly and can spread to other bones and joints. Please be aware of this condition, as it is often misdiagnosed, leading to life changing after effects.
It is only when you cannot walk you realise how many things you take for granted and how being immobile impacts on all aspects of life.
Finally would like to reiterate the phrase \” SEPTIC arthritis is quite rare and better to be safe than sorry. Take care guys.
